My dear, dear St. Augustine. Man of the world, son of a saint, convert to lifelong penance. As Father Groeschel – a fellow lover of NYC -said, that most “Catholic of Catholic saints.” City of God is the single greatest work of Western civilization. No contest. If there is a theological equivalent to the “living as Mary in a Martha world” it is the delightful interplay between Thomas (Martha) and Augustine (Mary).
St. Augustine’s Confessions have spoken to me and my love ones in ways that virtually no other writer has. Its almost like St. Augustine is writing about my own life.
