In his short booklet A Right View of Yourself, The Devilish Perils and Divine Possibilities of Self-Knowledge Rev. Fr. Frederick William Faber offers three devotions for spiritual solace and peace:
Devotion to Our Blessed Lady
Contemplation of Almighty God as our Father
Meditating on the earthly life of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Second Divine Person of the Blessed Trinity, in His Humanity
I can attest to the power and comfort of these devotions and their protection from bad thoughts – carnal and spiritual and theological.
Contemplate God as our Father…thanks for the reminder Wood!
Charlton could benefit a great deal from this book by his fellow countryman!

Thanks, buckyinky. Those “simple” devotions of Father Faber’s have helped me lately very much. Incidentally there is an awesome “old” book on confession – it’s a practical guide for Catholics, not an apologetics thing – called Pardon and Peace from the 40’s or ‘50’s I think. It’s great.
