Smaller Things

In the spirit of a previous post, I was remembering recently two offhand remarks by separate high school English teachers from years back:

Miss Sandra: “If you love to read you will never be bored.”  (I’m tempted to add “or lonely” to the end of the sentence, but one emends Miss Sandra with trepidation.)

Miss Janie:  “If after reading some work of literature one cannot succinctly state the work’s theme, there was either bad writing or bad reading.”  (And Miss Janie DID NOT assign bad writing.)

The merits of either statement are debatable I suppose.  But if heaven is an eternity of awestruck wonder at the Lord’s Providence, I imagine many small offhand comments might be emblazoned upon the crowns of the saints.
